The Story of Honi & The Carob Tree

This design of this website has been inspired by the story of Honi the sage.

While walking one day, Honi saw a woman planting a carob tree. He asked her, “How many years till this tree bears fruit?” “Seventy years,” replied the woman. The sage then asked “And do you expect to live long enough to enjoy the fruit and the shade?” The woman answered, “I found a fruitful world because my ancestors planted it for me. Likewise, I am planting this carob tree for my descendants.”

Talmud, Tractate Taanit 23a

L’Taken means ‘to repair’ in Hebrew. It appears in one of Judaism’s most important principles, tikkun olam, meaning to repair the world.

We see this work as an act of love for our community and an offering to the struggle for collective liberation.
